UNWTO: Africa’s sad loss

DR Walter Mzembi

African Union sponsored-candidate and Zimbabwe’s Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Dr Walter Mzembi, was by far the best candidate for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Secretary General’s job. However, at the end of the day, the worst candidate, Zurab Pololaskhivilli of Georgia won.

The second round was no longer about tourism. It was about world politics, financial muscle, give and take dealing and largely skin colour interests.

Africa lost out. It was the best chance ever Africa had but it was blown off.
